| The Superlative Form of Adjectives

Throughout the units you have already encountered the comparative forms of adjectives. For example, you learned how to say better, cheaper, more expensive, etc. Today, you encountered the question: Što je tvoj najčešći doručak?

The form of najčešći is an example of the superlative adjective form– meaning the most common.

| How to create the superlative form?

Once you know the comparative form of the adjective, you add the prefix naj- to the comparative form. Let’s examine several of the adjectives you already know. These examples will be in the masculine form (as they appear in a dictionary), but keep in mind that adjectives have all three genders in their singular and plural forms [najbolji (m.sg.), najbolja (f.sg.), najbolje (n.sg.) - najbolji (m.pl.), najbolje (f.pl.), najbolja (n.p.)].

We will talk more about comparative forms. For now, the ones above are the ones you have encountered so far. Knowing the comparative form is the most important part when we want to create the superlative form – we just add naj- to the beginning of the comparative form (not the dictionary form of the adjective).

brz

Yohan Blake je brz,

ali Tyson Gay je brži.

A Usain Bolt je najbrži.

he is fast

and he is the fastest

When forming the superlative of an adjective that starts with the letter j, we will have a double consonant in writing (jeftin - jeftiniji - najjeftiniji). This is one of the instances when a double consonant can appear in writing. In speech you should pronounce only one j – /najeftiniji/.

jak

najjači

Bill Kazmaier je jak,

ali Mark Henry je jači.

A Žydrūnas Savickas je najjači.
