8 | Modul 3: Gramatika

Ljubav prolazi kroz želudac

8 | 3 | Lekcija 1: Ne jedi rukama!

| When to Use the Instrumental Case?

The Instrumental case is used in the following situations. This is a review of all the things we have mentioned so far:

A Company

To indicate accompaniment (similar to English ‘’with’’). It is used with the preposition s in the

meaning of “with, in accompaniment with, together with.”

Putujem s mamom. – I travel with (my) mom.

A Tool

To indicate the tool (an instrument) or means used to accomplish an action (similar to English ‘’with’’ or ‘’by’’): Pay attention – in Croatian, in this case, there is no preposition s. When the Instrumental is used in the context of explaining a tool or the means used to accomplish an action, there’s no preposition necessary.

Putujem autobusom. – I travel by bus.

Jedem juhu žlicom. – I eat soup with a spoon.

Pišem pismo olovkom. – I

write a letter with a pen.

A Unity

To indicate a unity of two

entities (when referring to one thing combined with another).

Pijem čaj s limunom. – I drink tea with lemon.

In today’s class we talked about the way we eat things. As you saw, we use the Instrumental case, but without the preposition s.
